THE CBR EXAM

How the theory exam works

Since 7 April 2025 the car theory exam has been one continuous exam. Questions on traffic rules, insight and hazard perception come mixed together. The CBR tests hazard perception with short animations. You can sit the exam from the age of 16.

50 questions

Plus 2 test questions that do not count. Beforehand you get 2 practice questions to get used to it.

30 minutes

On average just over half a minute per question. With extra time you get 45 minutes.

44 correct

You may make a maximum of 6 mistakes. There are no longer separate sections with their own thresholds.

Always check the current rules, costs and number of questions at cbr.nl, because the CBR may change the exam.

Questions about the theory exam

The car theory exam has 50 questions, plus 2 test questions that do not count. You have 30 minutes and need at least 44 correct answers to pass.

The standard theory exam takes 30 minutes. With extra time you get 45 minutes.

You can sit the car theory exam from the age of 16.

Your theory certificate is valid for 18 months. You must pass your practical exam within that time.

No, these are practice questions to test your knowledge. The CBR’s real exam questions are different. With the online theory course included in your package you practise with full mock exams.
